bay model
The Bay Model in Sausalito was built in 1957 by the Army Corps of Engineers. Taking up an acre and a half, it was used until 2000 to test the effects of dredging, filling, waste and oil spills on the San Francisco Bay as well as San Pablo Bay, Suisun Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. It is made out of almost three million pounds of concrete. Today it isn’t used for research any more, but it is open to the public six days a week as an educational tool. And it’s awesome.
